When it comes to experiencing the magic of Walt Disney World® Resort, few moments are as enchanting as meeting beloved characters in person. From iconic princesses to heroic adventurers, character encounters bring joy and excitement to visitors of all ages.
One of the best ways to create lasting memories with your favorite Disney friends is through character dining experiences, where you can enjoy delicious meals while sharing special moments with these larger-than-life personalities. In addition to dining, there are countless opportunities to meet characters throughout the parks, whether during exclusive after-hours events, spontaneous roaming encounters, or classic meet-and-greets.
This blog post will guide you through various ways to connect with Disney characters, ensuring your visit is filled with magical interactions that you’ll cherish long after your trip is over.

- Dine with Magic: Meeting Characters Over Meals
Character dining is a magical way to meet Disney characters while enjoying a meal. In these specially themed restaurants, beloved characters visit your table, allowing you to interact, snap photos, and collect autographs as you dine. Due to their popularity, these experiences often fill up quickly, so it’s wise to book your reservations well in advance.
While character meals come with a cost, the experience of dining with your favorite characters in a comfortable, air-conditioned setting can be well worth it. This option lets you combine two activities—dining and character meet-and-greets—in one go. However, keep in mind that character dining tends to be more expensive than standard dining options and takes a lot longer than your standard table service meal.
During a character meal, characters will visit your table one by one, giving each guest a brief but delightful interaction. The specific characters at each meal may vary, but you can generally expect a consistent lineup. However, the restaurants do reserve the right to make substitutions (e.g., swapping Goofy for Pluto or Aurora for Ariel). For those who want to meet a variety of characters without the wait, character dining is a fantastic option. Instead of standing in line to meet one character, you can use that time to enjoy multiple character interactions while you eat.
One downside to consider is the price, which is higher than quick-service dining options. Additionally, each character’s visit to your table is relatively brief due to the number of guests they need to see. Despite this, you’ll still have enough time for a quick chat and a photo.
For those interested in character dining, it’s essential to check out a comprehensive guide to Disney World character dining experiences. With numerous options available, you can find the perfect setting for your magical meal. Popular locations like Cinderella’s Royal Table can book up to sixty days in advance, so be sure to secure your reservations early! As a travel advisor, this is something I often take care of for my clients, while providing suggestions on which character dining experiences will be the best options for their families.

2) Exclusive Encounters: Disney Character Meet-and-Greets at After-Hours Parties
For a truly unique Disney character meet-and-greet experience, consider attending special after-hours parties like Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party or Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party. These events offer rare opportunities to encounter characters who don’t typically make appearances during regular park hours. Plus, the characters are dressed in festive attire, making your photos extra special. With limited tickets available for these parties, wait times are usually shorter, allowing for more magical interactions.
Walt Disney World Resort is renowned for its enchanting displays and attractions year-round, but the holiday season brings an extra layer of magic with special seasonal characters. From Mickey Mouse dressed as Santa Claus to Elsa in her winter attire, these characters spread holiday cheer throughout the park. Guests of all ages will find themselves immersed in the festive spirit as they encounter their favorite characters in holiday costumes.
The seasonal characters are meticulously designed to enhance the joy and wonder of the holidays at Walt Disney World Resort. Whether it’s Halloween, Christmas, or another special occasion, Disney goes above and beyond to create a magical atmosphere. The detailed costumes and elaborate decor ensure that every visit is memorable and unique. Character greetings during these events are a highlight, featuring rare characters and themed outfits you won’t see at other times of the year.
In addition to Mickey’s holiday parties, other separately ticketed events include Disney Jollywood Nights at Disney’s Hollywood Studios® and After-Hours events at EPCOT®, Magic Kingdom® Park, and Disney’s Hollywood Studios. These events provide the opportunity to stay in the park with significantly fewer guests, making it an ideal time to enjoy your favorite attractions and meet characters. Check the My Disney Experience App or the Event Guide for specific times and locations.
While wait times to meet characters during these events are generally shorter than during the day, some characters, like Jack Skellington and Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas, can still have longer waits due to their popularity. They are a major draw at Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party, so be sure to get in line early if they’re a priority for you, or try checking back during parade times for shorter lines.

3) Secret Spots: Unplanned Meet-and-Greets in EPCOT
Have you ever wondered how Disney cast members in costume learn to interact with guests as characters? They undergo special training, which includes brief meet-and-greet sessions to gain real-world experience.
EPCOT is a prime location for these training interactions, often taking place in the World Showcase. The two most common spots to encounter these surprise appearances are between the Italy and American Adventure Pavilions and between the Canada and UK Pavilions.
These character meetings aren’t scheduled and won’t be listed in the My Disney Experience App, making them a delightful surprise if you stumble upon them. It’s an excellent chance to meet multiple characters at once, including some rare ones you might not see elsewhere. The best times to find these training sessions are typically when new Disney College Program classes begin and before major holidays like Halloween and Christmas, as characters prepare for their special holiday appearances.
If you’re visiting EPCOT, keep an eye out in these areas for a chance to enjoy these unexpected and magical character interactions.

4) Classic Encounters: Standing in Line for Disney Character Meet-and-Greets
With Disney Genie+ Service retired and Character Greetings not being offered as an option for Lightning Lane Multi Pass, we’re back to the traditional method of meeting characters—standing in line!
You can find beloved Disney characters in all four theme parks. The best way to discover which characters are available and where they’ll be is by using the My Disney Experience app. If the app has you stumped, no worries! As your travel advisor, I provide tutorials and assistance using the app so you can use it to navigate the parks during your visit.
To find character locations and times on the app, simply open the map, select “characters” at the top, and click on “show list.” This will display all the characters available for meet-and-greets, along with their locations and appearance times.
If there’s a particular character you’re eager to meet, it’s a good idea to arrive at their designated meeting spot a few minutes before they’re scheduled to appear. Disney characters tend to draw crowds quickly, so getting in line early can save you time and ensure you get a chance to meet them. Character attendants will cut off the line once the maximum number of guests has been reached, and you don’t want to be turned away to meet your favorite character because you weren’t there soon enough.
Many characters at Walt Disney World have stationary meet-and-greet spots. For example, you can find Ariel at Ariel’s Grotto, Cinderella at Princess Fairytale Hall in Magic Kingdom Park, and Anna and Elsa at Royal Sommerhus in EPCOT. However, always check your app for the latest times and locations, as character schedules can vary day-to-day.
Additional characters can also be found meeting and greeting across the parks in a less stationary fashion, being assigned popular spots in rotations. The My Disney Experience app really will be your best friend if meeting characters is one of your trip’s priorities.
By planning and using the My Disney Experience app, you can maximize your chances of meeting your favorite Disney characters and creating magical memories during your visit.

5) Surprise Encounters: Capturing Unplanned Character Moments
One of the most delightful experiences at Walt Disney World Resort is encountering characters unexpectedly. Many characters roam freely around the parks, providing spontaneous interactions that can be a highlight of your visit. In Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge®, for instance, you might bump into Rey, Chewbacca, Kylo Ren, and Stormtroopers. Even the Mandalorian has been seen wandering through this immersive land.
EPCOT is another great place to spot Disney characters who don’t have regularly scheduled meet-and-greet times. These surprise appearances add an extra layer of magic, as characters often pop up out of nowhere, ready to engage with guests.
Since roaming characters typically don’t have Disney PhotoPass photographers with them, it’s essential to have your phone or camera ready. These characters may not always be able to stop for pictures or autographs, making the experience more about the immersive interaction of being drawn into their world.
Although most characters have designated meet-and-greet spots, the My Disney Experience app can help you find those listed as “roaming” or “sightings throughout [location],” indicating they move around a specific area. While these encounters aren’t guaranteed, they offer a unique and magical touch to your day.
If you’re hoping to spot a rare character, attending a parade can also be a great strategy. While you won’t get one-on-one time, you might catch a quick photo or selfie if they come close enough.
Keep your eyes peeled for these special moments, as they can truly enhance your Disney experience and create unforgettable memories.

As you embark on your Disney adventure, remember that meeting characters is not just about snapping photos or collecting autographs; it’s about immersing yourself in the enchanting world of Disney and creating unforgettable memories.
Whether you choose the whimsical atmosphere of character dining, the unique experiences at special events, or the thrill of encountering roaming characters, each interaction brings its own special kind of magic.
So, make sure to plan, keep your eyes open, and embrace the spontaneity of these joyful encounters. With some preparation and a sprinkle of luck, you’ll have the chance to connect with your favorite Disney friends in ways that will make your trip extraordinary. Who would you want to meet first?
